Bed-Stuy Aging Improvement District (AID)

April 26, 2012
The Bed-Stuy Aging Improvement District (AID) is an on-going project to create and support initiatives that enhance the lives of seniors. Aging Improvement Districts bring the concerns and suggestions of older adults in specific neighborhoods to local businesses, non-profit organizations, city officials, cultural, educational and religious institutions to develop strategic initiatives that positively impact the lives of older adults and people of all ages.

The community of Bedford-Stuyvesant was selected as the third and only AID program neighborhood outside of Manhattan. Over the past six months the Coalition for the Improvement of Bedford- Stuyvesant (CIBS), leading planning and coordination efforts, has convened 15 community meetings with local senior groups as well as representatives from 25 organizations that provide direct service to seniors in the community. Through these feedback sessions CIBS and its partners have begun the process of developing programming, initiatives and events that benefit the aging and senior population of Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The Bed-Stuy AID will be implementing programming in eight categories:
  • Banking
  • Healthy Foods
  • Housing
  • Revitializing
  • Recreation and Cultural Activities
  • Local Business
  • Safety
